Diamondback Bicycles started life in 1978 as a radical new BMX brand, and went on to dominate the early 80’s. Mountainbikes were introduced around this time, and DB dominated the early 90’s MTB scene like they had done a decade before with BMX.
Diamondback have woken-up to the electric bike scene and launched four models for 2017. The Corax duo are full-suspension, and the Corvus pair are hardtails.
The DB Corax 1.0 27+ FS EMTB is designed to race back up the trails for more time and energy spent coming back down. The Bosch Performance Line CX drive is the top Bosch motor, and ally that to a 400Wh battery and you’re looking at around 60 miles on a charge (four hours recharge time).
Something new on the DB is the Bosch Purion display. It’s a smaller, bolder version of the Intuvia display. It sits on the left side of the handlebars, has bigger, better designed fonts, and is clearly an attempt to push Intuvia displays over to the commuting/touring market and give the eMTB market it’s own unique identity. Whether the loss of the USB port for charging will bother you (it’s still there, but is now only for data uploads) is open to debate.
The low frame makes all the Diamondback eMTBs suitable for men or women, and the Corax has a dropper post, handy for those times when you want to get lower on the bike on the descent and sit in the saddle on the way back up.
140mm of suspension travel at the front on a RockShox Sektor Silver TK 27+, and the full suspension is supplied by the RockShox Monarch R 190x51mm.
The Bosch motor is protected by a tough motor guard underneath, and Diamondback have decided to remove one side of the Bosch cover, revealing an aggressive handful of raised industrial lines. As well as giving the motor a different visual impact, it also reduces the width of the motor, so it actually extrudes less on the right-hand side than the tyre does!
Talking of tyres, they’re all-weather, all-surface WTB Ranger 27.5x2.8, offering a lot of coverage (and noise). The handlebars are 720mm, great for your breathing and fast downhill riding, maybe not so good for tight, tree-lined routes.
There’s plenty of pedalling choice in the Shimano SLX 11-speed gearset, and stopping power is supplied by Shimano Hydraulic 180mm Rotor brakes.
It’s great to see these first entries into the eMTB world from Diamondback, and if you’re a DB fan, then perhaps now is the time to get into the electric revolution.
