It’s not black or white when we’re talking about the sDuro AllMtn - it’s a grey area. A very warm, grey lightweight hydroformed alloy frame, mind, in matt, with plenty of black in the usual areas and some snazzy yellow highlights (love the gold Kashima-coated stanchions on the Fox 32 Talas CTD [Climb, Trail, Descend] forks). All cables are routed through the frame, the Yamaha crank drive motor sits in the gravity casing and the battery seamlessly blends into the motor going up the down tube.
The Haibike sDuro AllMtn RC is designed for some pretty bumpy coverage, with up to 150mm of travel possible in those forks, and the three modes are changed via a Talas knob. The firmest setting is Climb (almost locked out) and Descend gives the most damping. I would imagine if you’re going to ride this as a novice, you may keep it on the Trail setting for most of the time, and if you’re on the road, then Climb would be your best bet.
The suspension system is complemented by the KMC X10e 10 Speed gearset. This offers a dual ring on the front so climbing is even easier as you can keep it set on the inner cog. Tyres are Schwalbe Nobby Nic Performance 27.5 x 2.35.
Yamaha are on power duties for the AllMtn, and the 2015 250W motor offers up to 280% assistance and peaks at 80Nm of torque. It’s very quiet, it’s responsive, kicking in fast, and the three levels of assistance ( 'Eco', 'Standard' & 'High') seem plenty.
This Yamaha set-up uses a 400Wh battery with a quoted assisted range of up to 80 miles. A few hours will have your battery recharged, and the large, centrally-placed LCD display shows how much capacity the battery has left, as well as the time, the predicted range in your current level of assistance (good if you’re running low on battery and you can lower the level to save more battery), distance travelled, rpms, top speed, average speed - and it detaches from the bike when you want to park up.
Last but not least, we come to stopping power. Simple and ultra reliable Shimano M615 hydraulic disc brakes are fitted, which offer superior amounts of stopping power.
The Haibike sDuro AllMtn RC is a great all-rounder, happy to hug the tarmac or hurtle down those rocky slopes...
