Raleigh have taken their long-standing Pioneer model and given it an electric boost with a TranzX front hub motor. The brand new F16 motor has four levels of assistance, and the top level will be pulling you up the worst of those inclines that make a ride to work or the shops unthinkable otherwise.
This Ladies step-through model (gents, you’re perfectly welcome too) comes in a fetching lilac colour, which extends to the mudguards, the rear rack, and the forks. With the battery placed behind the comfy saddle and fully adjustable handlebars for optimum riding style, the Pioneer is a bike built for leisure, be that about town or on country lanes.
You’ll get anywhere from thirty to fifty miles on one battery charge, and the Shimano 8-speed twist-shift gear system offers plenty of help alongside the motor power. A handy display next to the left handgrip shows you how much battery charge you have left, and which assistance level you’re on. There’s also a USB port on the display, so if your phone is about to die while out on the road, you can plug it in here and still take calls and snaps.
Puncture-resistant tyres should help you avoid ever having to take out the repair kit, and front and back lights also come as standard, wired into the battery system so you never have to worry about keeping a set of AA’s to hand.
A big sturdy kickstand, soft plastic pedals, and chain guard also help you easily get about without getting dirty (or the bike having to lean against anything).
Also of note, you’ll never have to take the bike indoors as the battery slides out of the bike via a key lock system, so you can recharge it indoors without trailing the bike over your carpets.
The Raleigh Pioneer electric takes a classic formula and powers it up for the 21st century.
