Vanmoof Electrified (2015)

Dutch bike company Vanmoof make city bikes that have a distinctive oversized top tube. The Vanmoof Electrified finds space for a battery, computer, fixed lights, and a GPS locator in this tube. This means you can ride this bike nearly as fast as everyone else, and they’ll never know you’re only putting half the effort in that they are - sneaky.

The Vanmoof Electrified is a gorgeously designed bike. Vanmoof have an integrated 209Wh battery system built into the top tube, which takes around three hours to charge. On a long, twenty-three mile undulating ride, the 250W front-hub electrical motor managed to get one mile shy of the destination before the battery ran out. Fortunately, the Vanmoof features an automatic 2-speed drivetrain (tucked away within a fully-enclosed chain - no gears or grease) that, as long as you don’t need to cycle too far, won’t feel like too much of a struggle.

The onboard computer dashboard features three lights. At the top is the most impressive one, a large pulsing blue light that quickens as the battery fades, turning red when there’s not much left in the tank. Beneath the blue ‘life’ pulse is the level of assistance indicator. Half a circle is the base setting, and press the touch-sensitive panel and you’ll light both halves, giving you maximum assistance. Beneath this indicator is a small round circle that controls the on-off for the lights. To turn the whole Vanmoof Electrified bike on and off, you get two small (car key size) yellow silicone-encased switches, easily storable in your pocket.

Whatever’s on the inside of the bike (built-in Philips 40-lux-bright LED headlight and tail light, aforementioned battery, and a GPS for tracking a mislaid or stolen bike), it’s the stylish looks on the outside that will get you noticed. The anodised Aluminium frame makes a geometrical triangular shape between the chunky 28” wheels, and get this, using only stainless steel parts make the bike 100% rustproof! (perfect for a bike rack on the back of a campervan).

Like all Vanmoof bicycles, it’s a lovely smooth ride that really feels like you’re atop something special. It’s an individualistic bike that will be the envy of all. It’s the George Clooney of e-bikes - a smooth, silver-tongued charmer.
