A tale of push and pull in Portland for electric bikes

“We have so much pride in being cyclists. So when new things come around, there’s this resistance. It’s weird."(Henry Cromett)

Wake Gregg opened Portland's first all-electric-bike shop in 2008, and nearly ten years later the US seems to be waking up to the many ways electric bikes could enrich people’s lives.

Portland has great requirements for e-bikes: good weather, hills, good infrastructure, a bike-friendly culture, and wealthy people living in the inner city. But as this article goes onto make clear, there’s something of a culture-block on accepting electric pedal power.

The piece goes on to raise interesting points from local people, but although Portland seems to be pretty resistant to the new cycling experience, we all know that once ridden, forever smitten.
