Electric bike commuters to benefit from new bridge proposal

The Cambridge city wards of Chesterton and Abbey could be linked by a new pedestrian and bike bridge if councillors approve the project.

The £4.5 million route would link land between Ditton Walk and Fen Road across Ditton Meadows and the river in Cambridge. The 44-metre long bridge would precede the arrival of the new Cambridge North train station later this year.

Cambridgeshire County Councillor Ian Bates, chairman of the economy and environment committee, said: "This bridge will provide a vital and safe link for cyclists and pedestrians to jobs, transport hubs such as rail and education. We know in Cambridge that cycleways are not only well used but when provided encourage even more people to get on their bikes and reduce congestion and pollution, improve health and therefore boost the economy."
