‘Pass me that Monkey Bike’, or ‘If you lock one hundred chimpanzees in a bike garage, they’d eventually design the Motochimp...’

Trust the Daily Mail to find the wackiest stories. If you fancy riding to work looking like an extra from ‘Planet of the Apes’, there’s a new electric bike for you.

The electric 'monkey-bike' hits speeds of 20mph (instantly breaking the 15.5mph legal limit in the UK) and is just one metre long. The range of almost forty miles sounds good, but nowhere does the Mail offer important advice that this ‘Motochimp’ qualifies as a moped, therefore lacking all the benefits of a bicycle.

It’s also powered by a 350W rear hub motor, exceeding the 250W UK limit. It’s expected to cost around £1,300. We’d recommend a good Bosch-powered electric bike that makes you look like an adult for just a slightly larger investment.

Perhaps the designers’ original concept reveals why the product looks slightly juvenile. 'In designing Motochimp, our original concept was inspired by a sketch from a 10-year old girl.
