cycle, electric bike, Sustrans, transport, walk -

Thousands of miles of former railway lines are open to the public as peaceful routes for walking or cycling through lovely countryside, and it’s all thanks to Sustrans, the UK charity that helps people travel by foot, bike or public transport. In the North-East and Yorkshire, Sustrans have made disused train lines accessible for people, such as the Consett & Sunderland Railway path, Berwick to Lindisfarne, and Route 67, running from Long Whatton, near Loughborough, to join National Route 71 near Northallerton in Yorkshire. The developing Peters Village on the River Medway (part of Bellway Homes' Portland Gardens development scheme) can proudly be seen to encourage cycling along this riverside stretch with big hoardings saying as much. What fantastic news to see Team GB's cycling heroes call for a 'legacy of everyday cycling' in their greatest moment. High on Olympic golds, Laura Trott and Jason Kenny were among Rio Olympians signing a letter to Theresa May demanding real action on cycle transport. Joining Trott and Kenny were Mark Cavendish, Joanna Rowsell Shand and Becky James, as well as Sir Chris Hoy, telling May: “You were widely reported in the media as saying there will be 'no limits' on the honours that could be bestowed on our medal winners.” “But the best way to honour the achievements of our athletes would be a legacy of everyday cycling...

Australia, bicycle, cycle, fine -

Oh my word. Don't give anybody in the UK government ideas... Michael Gratton was recently cycling to work in Sydney when he was stopped by a police “education and awareness” blitz and fined $531 (£310). The severity of the crime? No helmet, no bell and not having a working brake. I think we can all agree that two of those three 'crimes' are pretty laughable. The Guardian reports on these horrifying series of fines that seem more likely to deter people from cycling than any badly-driven lorry or impatient driver. Requesting every cyclist carries iD on them seems a particularly bonkers legal requirement. Chris Standen, an analyst at...

Matt rides to work every day, and although it's not many miles, there's still one hill which results in a sweat. Matt first tried out the Haibike sDuro HardSeven SL and was very impressed by the Yamaha power, coming back with the 'Electric Smile' we like to see. Even better, Matt tried the Raleigh Strada Electric next with it's automatic Shimano Di2 gearing and Shimano Steps motor, and he was blown away, stating 'it's been while since I smiled like that on a bike.' One more cyclist converted...
